The Creative behind Reality Check:  Ock The Wizard

Written By Anwar Curtis (A.C. the MaYoR)

When my cousin hit my line to tell me about Ock The Wizard’s Reality Check event in November I knew right away that this would be an event no creative should miss.  I always admired creatives from the City of Brotherly Love, which is roughly 90 miles away from my hometown Harrisburg, for their critical yet serene creative thinking, their chilled/by any means soul, and respect level each person brings to whatever creative space that’s being occupied, so it was no surprise that Reality Check would be anything less than exhilarating.  In attendance was Philly poet Lindo Yes, artist J. Taylor, and vocalist Maya Simone who shared their creative energy amongst those in attendance, and of course some well deserved food and drinks.

While we all waited for Ock to make his presence felt at this kickback, those in attendance began to enjoy homemade food and drinks, which always leads to great yet depending on the topic, controversial dialogue which consisted of everything from the 45th president and his twitter fingers, to the “Me Too” movement.

So what was Ock’s reasoning for receiving this reality check…I can say it was an intense process to say the least.  Ock decided to lock himself in a clothed box no bigger than an oversized elevator for a little over a week, secluding himself from technology, food, and even a bathroom.  The only form of life that he had access to besides a handful of friends stopping by to check on him was paintbrushes, paint, a bucket for bathroom purposes and a few gallons of water he purchased days prior.

Once the clock striked 8:00 p.m. Ock began to cut the cloth creating a small doorway for his release. Exhausted, Ock greeted us all with a huge smile and walls full of his thoughts, in art form.  I was fortunate enough to sit down with Ock for a small discussion on how this reality check concept came about, what inspired some of the drawings on the walls, and how he deals with balance.

Now allow me to introduce you to Ock The Wizard and give him a few minutes because he’s #JustReflecting
